Once upon a time, in a tall tree near a sparkly river, there lived a young osprey named Ollie. Ollie had soft brown feathers, a white head, and bright yellow eyes. He loved his cozy nest high up in the branches. Every day, he watched his mother and father soar over the water, diving down to catch shiny fish. “One day, I will fly like them,” Ollie chirped happily.

But when Ollie looked down from the nest, his heart went pitter-patter. The ground seemed so far away, and the river looked like a wiggly blue ribbon. “What if I fall?” he whispered. His mother nuzzled him gently. “Little one, every osprey learns to fly. We will help you. Just be brave.”

One sunny morning, Father Osprey said, “Today is the day, Ollie. Spread your wings and feel the wind.” Ollie gulped. He stretched his wings wide, but he felt shaky. “I’m scared,” he said. Mother Osprey smiled. “It’s okay to be scared. Even the bravest birds feel scared at first. Take a deep breath.”

Ollie took a deep breath. He flapped his wings. Whoosh! He lifted off the nest. For a moment, he wobbled. “I’m flying!” he chirped. But then a gust of wind blew him sideways. He tumbled and fluttered. “Help!” he cried. Father Osprey swooped under him. “I’m here, Ollie. Keep flapping. You can do it!”

Ollie flapped harder. His wings felt stronger. He steadied himself and glided through the air. The wind whispered in his ears. The sun warmed his feathers. He looked down and saw the river sparkling like diamonds. “This is fun!” he squealed.

But then he noticed something below. A little fish was trapped in a shallow pool, flopping and splashing. “Oh no!” said Ollie. “That fish needs help.” He remembered how his parents caught fish, but he didn’t want to eat this one. He wanted to save it. “I must be brave and kind,” he thought.

Ollie flew down carefully. He dipped his talons into the water and gently scooped up the little fish. Then he flew to the deep part of the river and dropped the fish back in. The fish swam away with a grateful flick of its tail. “Thank you, brave osprey!” it seemed to say.

Ollie flew back to his parents, his heart full of joy. “I did it! I flew, and I helped a friend!” Mother and Father Osprey hugged him with their wings. “We are so proud of you, Ollie. You were brave and kind.”

From that day on, Ollie loved to fly. He explored the river, made friends with other birds, and always helped those in need. And every night, before he tucked his head under his wing, he smiled and thought, “Being brave means trying, even when you’re scared.”

So, little one, when you feel scared, remember Ollie the osprey. Take a deep breath, spread your wings, and be brave. You might just discover something wonderful.
